Scavenger Hunt Artwork!

Last week, HALO youth continued practicing time management while participating in a Scavenger Hunt workshop. HALO youth paired with a volunteer and searched for their list of items throughout the center. HALO youth were given a blank canvas and asked to manage their time wisely as they used their gathered materials to create a positive art illustration. Each illustration was unique, creative, and inspiring. One HALO youth commented, “This taught me that you can make something out of anything.” At the end of the workshop, HALO youth proudly shared their work with the group.

HALO Youth Practice Time Management

April’s life skill is time management and HALO youth have been exploring positive ways to spend their time all month. We believe time management is an important skill for HALO youth to consider as they work towards reaching all of their goals and aspirations. HALO youth created collages illustrating how they wanted to spend their time and made a contrasting collage, which illustrated what they do not want to do with their time. HALO youth also completed partner projects and managed their time as they worked within a deadline. We love hearing the youth explain why time management is important during the workshops and are excited they have developed some tools to help them manage their time!

Workshop Spotlight: Nursing

Last week, HALO youth had the opportunity to participate in a nursing workshop hosted by William Jewel School of Nursing. Nursing students explained how to prepare for a college readiness path and shared resources with the youth about scholarships and grants. HALO youth had hands-on opportunities as they explored various nursing tools such as a stethoscope, blood pressure monitor, and reflex hammer. There was also a hand washing experiment that allowed youth to see how well they were washing their hands. We loved seeing HALO youth explore a new career path and can see many of the participants becoming successful nurses in the future! Special thanks to William Jewel College for hosting the workshop and for donating art supplies to the center.

Long Term Workshop Spotlight: Woodworking

During our spring semester of Long Term Programming, HALO youth had the opportunity to participate in a woodworking workshop where they learned basic woodworking skills while making a self-designed lamp. The boys collaborated with the volunteers to create a lamp design, build a base, and execute their plan during the eight week course. The HALO youth worked with a variety of tools and tried different skills that will be applicable to many future careers. The workshop also allowed youth to explore important life skills such as goal-setting, perseverance, and focus. Many thanks to the woodworking volunteers: Jake, Patrick, Mike, and Jono.

Long Term Workshop Spotlight: Art & Play at Operation Breakthrough

This week concludes our spring semester of Long Term Workshops. We enjoyed watching the youth explore a variety of future-focused workshops and are very thankful to our partners and volunteers who helped us support HALO youth. During the Art & Play Workshop at Operation Breakthrough, the youth participated in weekly activities that combined creativity and movement, while focusing on valuable life skills. Each workshop started with a question of the day, which allowed the youth to express themselves and share their ideas. We loved that Operation Breakthrough created a HALO display board where the youth could proudly display their work for the week. We look forward to continuing Art & Play in the future and are excited for our next semester of Long Term Workshops to kick off this June!
